In this globalising and competitive business environment, the value of location as a business measure is fast becoming an important consideration for organisation. Geospatial Analytics with its capability to visualise, analyse and model business information spatially is emerging as a location intelligence tool. Today, many kinds of industries are employing geospatial analytics as an integral part of their business processes.
Such as Site Selection, we would ask these questions:
- Where are the shops or branches of the company located today?
- Where are the competitors located?
- What would be the surrounding market area for a new location?
- What are the socio-economic characteristics of the people living in this market area?
All these geography may affect our business. We can reveal the answers behind our land through geospatial analytics.
In the course IS415 GeoSpatial Analytics for Business Intelligence, the assignment 2 asked us to employ geodesign approach to model and assess the impacts of the proposed alternative route for Singapore new planned MRT line, Cross Island Line (CRL).The specific scope of work of the assignment are as follows:
- To delineate the alignment of the alternative MRT route.
- To identify five keys impact factors of the assessment.
- To compile GIS layers representing these five factors.
- To prepare analysis and impact maps of the alternative route.
- To report the findings of the impact analysis and provide your recommendations.
To fulfill the task, I first delineated the alignment of alternative MRT route using QGIS. In QGIS, I ran raster data processing to get the route information.
Then I decided to discover the five key impact geospatial factors for the areas near the MRT route.
- Factor 1: Impact on costs to taxpayers
- Factor 2: Impact on residents and other land users
- Factor 3: Impact on transportation Connectivity
- Factor 4: Impact on land use consideration
- Factor 5: Impact on surrounding economy and business
Based on these factors, I finally got the conclusion for the alternative route.
